Catch up with the Finals of Division One League of Legends in this recap.

Congratulations to Maryville University for being the first Division One League of Legends winners! Not only that, but they managed a perfect season without losing a single matchup. Maryville’s team of Crimson, Music, Toasty, ScaryJerry, and Cryogen defeated Winthrop in the Best-of-5 Finals on Friday night for a victorious 3-0.

Finals Recap

Even though game 1 started with Winthrop getting first blood, Maryville were the true winners of the early game. MU Music stole jungle monsters from WU Rapid without defeating him completely. The first mistake for Winthrop. Maryville’s scaling grew from the top and bot lane pressures, which soon resulted in them getting 3 kills in top lane and 2 in bot lane. Kill score was 5-1. The second Winthrop mistake. Winthrop lost void grubs but did manage to capture first drake, a much needed objective, at about 13 minutes. The fall of Winthrop’s towers, however, showed the scale difference. The third Winthrop mistake. Maryville took down the 2nd tower in top-lane, the 1st bot-lane tower fell with 2 kills for them, mid-lane tower fell. MU Music was the unequivocal MVP for Maryville as they pushed their advantage. The 2nd drake and rift herald were collected in a blink of an eye. Winthrop tried to fight for Atakhan only for it to turn into an Ace for Maryville. Winthrop’s base was entered at about 23 minutes. They barely managed to chase off the first nexus push, leaving one nexus tower up. But the next push, combined with a Baron buff, spelled an Ace and a victory for Maryville.

Game 2 started with fights. MU Music caught out a low-health WU Rapid in jungle, bot lane traded kills, Winthrop lost 2 players while in river near Baron pit, and MU Crimson won a 1v1 with WU Denathor with the help of a tower shot. It still took time for 1st drake to be caught by Maryville. It was at about 11 minutes this time. Winthrop was still fighting with a triple kill in top river to make the kill score 7-5. Maryville, like with game 1, was getting the towers. A disastrous Ace on Winthrop at rift herald determined the winner of the scaling battle. Maryville soon got a 2nd drake. In quick succession, Maryville took Atakhan and felled the 2nd top- and mid-lane towers. Winthrop was forced to defend their base at 22:41 in a way that mirrored game 1, fending off the first push only for Maryville to return with a buff, this time a third drake, and ending the game with an Ace.

Game 3 showed a newfound strength in Winthrop as they tied up the kill score 2-2. An additional 3 kills in top lane signified the first scaling advantage they had all match. Maryville was unperturbed as they got all 3 void grubs. Top-lane tower fell to Winthrop; bot-lane tower fell to Maryville. MU Toasty on Galio was tanky, but Winthrop could still take him down together. A free rift herald went to Maryville as well as a 2nd-tier top lane tower. Concerning. Winthrop did get 2nd drake under their wing. Then it happened. WU Only35 got caught out by Maryville on his way to his teammates in top lane. Maryville pulled off a near Ace (1 Winthrop player left alive) and moved to push this advantage. Kill score went to 10-11. Atakhan and another near Ace at 3rd drake helped Maryville grow into the powerhouse that played in the previous games. Winthrop’s mid-lane tower fell with both teams needing to regroup. Maryville got Baron. Both teams were even, 3-3, in drakes, but this didn't stop Winthrop’s mid-lane base tower from falling at 30:15. The 7th drake went to Maryville for a total of 4. Baron showing up again allowed the game to end. Maryville baited Winthrop by starting up the damage then dove on them to clear the lane to take the nexus. It was a Maryville win with a 28-19 kill score and 9k gold difference.
