Fording the Brook: Stony Brook VALORANT Surges into Spring 2026 Playoffs

A late-season win streak has empowered the Seawolves entering playoffs. We caught up with some of them to hear how they're preparing for their first match.
The Stony Brook VALORANT team wasn’t recruiting like other colleges. They weren’t reinventing the wheel in-game. No, what Stony Brook University (SBU) prides itself on is not what they are given, but what they grow. The Stony Brook Seawolves, for the first time in their DivisionONE tenure, earned a three-way tie for third in the 2026 VALORANT Spring Split and will now match up against West Virginia University for the privilege to play Maryville University in the semifinals of the Spring Playoffs.
As Swiss Army knife sixth-woman and VALORANT Game Changers competitor Giavana ‘Gia’ Dickinson would put it: “Stony Brook isn’t rigid, we’re a team that adjusts. We can wing it and we can do it well.” Giavana’s statements came with receipts too, as in their most recent matchup – the season finale against St. Clair College – SBU ran a composition they’ve never used before on the deciding map of Corrode and flattened the St. Clair Saints in a 13-4 romp.
For Gia, competing in DivisionONE is about more than just VALORANT, it is about representation. As one of the few women competing in co-ed collegiate esports, joined by fellow DivisionONE alumna Jasmine ‘Jazzyk1ns’ Manankil, she feels a responsibility to be a positive role model to women interested in gaming. Alongside this spotlight, she mentioned that DivisionONE has been instrumental in developing her for the wider competitive scene both within co-ed competition and Game Changers (GC). To her, playing in DivisionONE is playing against ‘the big guys’; and after facing off against the titans of this conference, “the little guys don't seem as difficult anymore.”
Outside of DivisionONE, Stony Brook VALORANT competes in a host of other tournaments including CECC, NACE, and Riot Games’ Collegiate VALORANT circuit (CVAL). Despite squeezing into just the 5th seed of DivisionONE, SBU has pummeled opponents in every other tournament format. NACE matches became warmups and the Seawolves are proud of their 2nd place seeding in CVAL’s East Division, all powered by star player and freshman in-game leader (IGL) Tony ‘BigTonkaT’ Wong. His reliability, Gia claims, is what gives SBU the confidence to bounce back even after tough losses.
If nobody knows what to do, we turn to Tony. We know he’s got us.
Giavana ‘Gia’ DickinsonOn their horizon awaits a West Virginia squad that has won two of their past three games, including a breezy 2-0 victory over the Seawolves in late February. That match, including a 13-3 battering on Haven, is still fresh in the minds of Stony Brook’s team. “After that loss to West Virginia, we had a team talk,” Giavana reflected. “Our team captain (Gunny ‘Gunny’ Lee), sat us down and said that we would have our turn. He reminded us how much work we have put in, and that we just had to close the season out strong.” That pep talk was all the motivation that SBU needed to turn their 2-3 record into a 4-3 playoff berth and stage their rematch against the Mountaineers.
Unsurprisingly, the last matchup against West Virginia was a Dino ‘Dinxx’ Ferreira highlight reel, including a 24-kill, 5-death Neon performance on that Haven map. Shutting down the burgeoning WVU offense, powered by one of DivisionONE’s sharpest shooters, is going to have to be the key for a Stony Brook University win.
Fortunately, BigTonkaT has ideas.
“That first game against WVU was a fluke. We didn’t show up as individuals. When playoffs start, we’ll show them what we got,” claimed Tony.
Regardless of the outcome of this playoff matchup, the future is bright for both Gia and the Stony Brook program overall. Gia’s experience competing in DivisionONE has empowered her decision-making and mechanical ability back on her GC team ‘Ghost Gaming’ and with BigTonkaT around for four more years as a building block, the Seawolves are equipped with a strong core to keep the good fight in DivisionONE for years to come.
To catch this playoff match live, be sure to tune in to the DivisionONE VALORANT Twitch channel on Monday, March 16th. A clash of the titans awaits to set the table for a reigning champion Maryville team eager to defend their crown.
