Winthrop enters the Division ONE finals as underdogs, but with momentum, firepower, and a small shift on Maryville’s side, this matchup may be far closer than it looks.n for the article.

The long-awaited Division ONE finals are here, and Maryville University enters as clear favorites. Their dominance throughout the season makes that expectation more than fair.

But finals don’t always follow expectations.

This isn’t the same Maryville roster that built that dominance. With Chloric now signed to Natus Vincere, the team enters this series with a small but important change. ec1s steps in and takes over the in-game leader role.

It is not a massive downgrade, but Maryville is still stepping into the most important match of their season with an adjustment. Even small changes like that can affect timing, communication, and decision-making in key moments. And in a game like VALORANT, those moments decide everything.

On the other side, Winthrop University comes into this series with real momentum. Their semifinal win over St. Clair was not close, 13–3 and 13–7 against the third seed in the tournament. That is not just a win, that is a team playing with confidence.

And more importantly, they look comfortable.

With a lineup of Infiltrator, Governor, StrongTallGuy62, Moobs, and veyr0n, Winthrop has a clear identity. They are a team willing to take fights, speed the game up, and trust their mechanics in big moments. Players like Governor and Infiltrator bring the kind of impact that do not always need perfect setups to succeed.

That matters a lot in a final.

Maryville’s structure has carried them all season, but finals are rarely clean. VALORANT is a game where one round can flip momentum, where one player getting hot can change an entire map. When things get messy, the gap between teams starts to shrink.

And that is where Winthrop have a real chance.

They have already seen what happens when the game stays controlled, losing 2-0 in the regular season with 13–7 and 13–4 scorelines. But that was a different version of both teams.

This time, Winthrop enters with momentum and a settled lineup that just proved itself in playoffs. Maryville still has the edge, but they are also stepping into a final with a slight adjustment.

If Winthrop can take advantage early, the series can shift quickly.

All it takes is one map going their way, one shift in confidence, one moment where the pressure moves to the other side. Because once that happens, the game stops being predictable.

Maryville should win this series.

But if Winthrop can keep the pace high, trust their firepower, and turn this into a back-and-forth fight, then this final is far from decided.

And that could be enough for them to take it.
